The framed letter that stands in front of the painting claims it an original work by Richard Wilson.  It is described as being a gift from the artist to a Colonel Bramston-Smith in gratitude for him having stood bail for the artist when he got into financial difficulties in Dublin.  The origin and sincerity of the letter are unclear, but the painting is not by Wilson and has recently been attributed to George Mullins.
