A Note on the Artist 

Born in Kiev 1894, into a religious Jewish family.  Studied art in Kiev, then Paris 1913, befriended Soutine & Chagall.  Returned to Russia during Great War & worked for Russian ballets.  Went back to Paris 1921; French citizen 1927. Collected Jewish art objects.  Travelled to Palestine 1929. Fled to USA 1939; returned Paris 1945, produced 100's of rabbinical portraits & judaic themes as if partly fulfilling his father's wish for him to become a rabbi.  Died Paris 1962.
