Collection Details
Professor Giuseppe Grassi; with Agnew, 1928, and sold to Sir Thomas Barlow, 1933; with Agnew, 1936, and sold to the Earl of Sandwich; again with Agnew, 1944, when acquired by Lord Faringdon. On the reverse are two unidentified seals.
Background
Formerly catalogued under the names of Bandinelli and ‘School of Michelangelo’. To attempt a precise attribution for this damaged fragment would seem to be hazardous, but the influence of Michelangelo’s late Pietà in the Cathedral at Florence may be detected in the head of Christ.
