Background
This full-length portrait of the 2nd Lord Faringdon dates from the late part of Sickert’s career – a period of renewed innovation.  It is typical of this period in being a large, coarsely textured canvas worked from photographs.  Sickert painted the debonair young aristocrat breezing down the steps of his country house, Buscot Park, with a sharp suit and a wicked grin.
